The plastic/composite intake manifold on the 4.6L 2-valve V8 develops fatigue cracks at the coolant crossover duct (splits across the front, behind the alternator), dumping coolant and risking overheating. Ford's formal recall (01M02) covered only police/fleet Crown Victorias; a December 2005 class-action settlement covered consumer 1996-2001 Grand Marquis, Town Car and Crown Victoria owners with reimbursement of about $735. Manifolds with an aluminum crossover superseded the all-plastic part from roughly 2002.
